With July just around the corner, some Albertans may get some help from the Federal government thanks to the Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP).

CAIP is a tax-free amount paid to help individuals and families offset the cost of the federal pollution pricing. It is available to residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. It consists of a basic amount and a supplement for residents of small and rural communities.

You must have resided in one of the following provinces on the first day of the payment month and the last day of the previous month in order to be eligible: Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, or Ontario. During the same time frame, you must also fulfil at least one of the following requirements:

  • You have (or previously had) a spouse or common-law partner

  • You are (or previously were) a parent and live (or previously lived) with your child

  • You are 19 years of age or older

A child could be eligible as long as they meet all the criteria:

  • Your child is under 19 years of age.

  • Your child lives with you.

  • You are primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of your child.

  • Your child is registered for the Canada child benefit.

To be eligible for the CAIP payment, you don't have to apply. When you file your income tax and benefit return, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will assess your eligibility and, if you are eligible, give you payments.

The Alberta program provides an annual credit of:

  • $539 for an individual.

  • $270 for a spouse or common-law partner.

  • $135 per child under 19.

  • $270 for the first child in a single-parent family.

If you are eligible, you can anticipate getting the CAIP on the 15th of July, October, January and April.

The April payment will be a retroactive amount based off of your 2021 Income Tax and Benefit return that was processed and you have been determined to be eligible.
