According to the City of Airdrie, Airdronians will have to wait for consistent freezing temperatures before getting to skate on outdoor rinks.

This time last year, Airdronians would be able to go out and enjoy the outdoor skating rinks, but Alberta as a whole has seen temperatures above freezing and with that, outdoor rinks in Airdrie have been put on hold.

While we don't have the rinks flooded, the city is working on having them ready to go.

"We're working on the outdoor rinks getting them safe for people to play on as soon as we get temperatures that are consistently below zero so we could start making ice," stated Cory Anderson,  a Coordinator with the City of Airdrie Parks Department.

According to the City, outdoor rinks are flooded once the temperature drops and is maintained at a constant -10 degrees Celsius for a minimum of one week. Outdoor rinks are available for all residents to use and enjoy on a first-come, first-served basis. The City of Airdrie does not book outdoor rinks or ice surfaces.

"We're hoping that anytime soon we should be able to get out there and start flooding the surfaces."

Anderson stated he has heard some buzz around the city about how excited Airdronians are for the outdoor rinks.

Here is the list of outdoor rinks the city maintains:

  • Bayview Way Park (Tennis courts at Bayview Way/Bayview Street)
  • Fletcher Regional Park
  • Plainsmen Arena/Jensen Park
