Strike shuts down Canada Post — what it means for Airdrie mail-in ballots
With a national postal strike halting mail delivery across Canada, the City of Airdrie is warning voters that special ballot packages for the municipal election may not arrive on time. Canada Post confirmed Sept. 25 that, “The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has launched a national strike following today’s government announcement on Canada Post’s transformation.” “Mail and parcels will not be processed or delivered for the duration of the national strike, and some post offices will be closed,” Canada Post stated. “Service guarantees are suspended for items already in the postal network. We have notified customers that their scheduled pickups have been cancelled. No new items will be accepted until the national disruption is over.” “All mail and parcels in the postal network will be secured and delivered as quickly as possible once operations resume,” Canada Post added. “However, a national strike of any length will impact service to Canadians well after the strike activity ends. Processing and delivery may take some time to fully return to normal.” The City of Airdrie posted that, “Due to the Canada Post strike, we cannot guarantee a timely delivery of the Special Ballots. You can still visit us at City Hall at 400 Main St SE Airdrie to pick up and/or drop off the Special Ballots in-person.” “Mail-in ballots sent out: Starting Sept. 29, 2025. Packages will be sent to voters after ballots have been printed and as packages are ready,” the City stated. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot application is Oct. 20, 2025, at 12 p.m. (noon). Completed mail-in ballot packages must be returned by Oct. 20 at 4:30 p.m. to City Hall, 400 Main St. SE. To request a mail-in ballot, applications must be sent to elections@airdrie.ca and include: Full legal name as it appears on identification Date of birth (day/month/year) Address Whether the ballot will be picked up at City Hall or mailed, and the mailing address if mailed A copy of identification must be included with the completed ballot. The City specifies this can be “a printed photo of your ID, or a photocopy of your ID.” On its webpage, the City lists this section header as “Identifiction Requirements” [sic]. The City states, “The personal information being collected is authorized under section 4(c) of the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) and will be used for the purpose of administering the 2025 General Election Special Ballot process in compliance with the Local Authorities Election Act. While your personal information may be entered into an automated system for the purpose of preparing the PER, it will be managed and protected in accordance with the provisions of POPA.” Sign up to get the latest local news headlines delivered directly to your inbox every afternoon.
