An Airdrie family was cutting down a tree in the backyard when the worst happened.

The tree fell and impaled 11 year-old Emily Power last weekend as her family was doing yard work.  She was critical and placed into a medically induced coma.  She suffered a skull fracture, damaged spleen, injured lung, 6 broken vertebrae, and a broken ankle.

Power is showing signs of recovery though and has been moved from the ICU ward to the trauma ward.

Today (September 8) she was able to use her walker to make a lap around the nurses station.

In a post on social media, her family said that the brain injury has caused some memory loss but she is making strides and fighting her way back to health.

"She has some memory loss and sometimes you can't make out what she is saying but she is talking."

A family member has set up a gofundme page to help the family with bills and extra care during Emily's recover.
