According to Canadian Blood Services, Airdrie was generous when it came to blood donations in the past year.

"In the 2017 calendar year, Airdrie clinics have been able to collect nearly 106 percent of their target," said Deb Steele-Kretschmer, Communication Specialist with Canadian Blood Services. "We've been out to collect just over 1,600 units of blood, and in Airdrie we've collected just over 1,700 units of blood."

Even with that generosity, Steele-Kretschmer said there is always a need for blood, with cancer patients, accident victims and people with blood disorders relying on transfusions every day. That need is amplified during the holiday season.

"Canadian Blood Services is urging eligible donors in Alberta to help fill the nearly 3,100 appointments that are available before January 6. The holiday season is a slower time for blood donations. Travel, family activities and changes in routine means there tends to be fewer donations."

There are currently 1,179 appointments that need to be filled in the Calgary area, and Airdrie has one last clinic before the end of the year.

"The upcoming Airdrie clinic at Airdrie Town & Country Centre is on Boxing Day, and there are currently four appointment spots available."

With that clinic nearly full, Steele-Kretschmer said there will be another opportunity soon for people to donate. Another clinic will take place on January 30 at the T&C.
