On Wednesday (March 1), an Airdrie bantam girls basketball team got a lesson in giving back by helping out at the Airdrie Food Bank.

Assistant Coach Tara Bullock said the team wasn't excited at first, but that quickly changed.

"When we got there, they were actually all very happy and excited and wanted to be there, and they actually didn't want to leave when our time was up, they wanted to stay longer and keep working and they actually thought it very fun."

Bullock's daughter is the head coach of the team. Bullock said the two of them were inspired by the example set by her daughter's past coaches, who always prioritized giving back to the community.

"I wanted to teach the girls that that's an important thing that they can use later in life, that they can give back now and that they can do that as they grow as well."

Bullock thinks getting young athletes involved in the community teaches them enduring lessons.

"I think it just helps them grow into people with positive influence in their life, and they become more positive influences on their peers as well."

She says that the lessons can translate onto the court as well, as the girls will learn respect and a positive attitude.
