A telephone scam impersonating the Canada Revenue Agency continues to grow and Airdrie RCMP is aware of it.

Cst. Dan Martin says that they’ve heard more complaints about the scam in the last number of weeks.

“In the last few months, it’s probably been ramped up more than what we’ve seen in the past. Obviously, people have to take precautions to not fall for these scams.”

Constable Martin also says that the CRA will never phone you for payments or require you to use Itunes cards to pay off taxes, which are some of the common occurrences with the scam.

If you’re unsure if you’re being scammed, there are ways you can look into it.

“If you’re second guessing yourself or it sounds like it might be the real deal,” said Cst. Martin, “you can always ask to call the person back and ask for a phone number and do your research before committing to any payment of any sort.”
