Albertans have spoken and Jason Kenney’s United Conservative Party has won a majority government.

The writ was dropped four weeks ago in Alberta and there was never a dull moment in the campaign following.

Once polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday night, results started rolling in and the UCP dominated from the get-go. However, NDP leader Rachel Notley has won her seat in the Edmonton Strathcona riding.

The ‘vote anywhere’ advance poll votes are still left to count but it’s unlikely they will change the overall outcome.

Here in Airdrie, incumbent UCP candidate Angela Pitt has been re-elected as the representative for Airdrie-East. With the 82 of 84 of polling stations reporting, Pitt received 13,947 votes.

Pitt said it was a long and exhausting campaign and she’s grateful for the support from local voters.

NDP candidate Roxie Baez Zamora, received the second highest number of votes, with 4,137. She said she is pleased with the work of her party over the course of the campaign.

In Airdrie Cochrane, Peter Guthrie has been voted in as the MLA for the newly created riding, with 13,363 votes recorded from 86 of 97 polls. He says the UCP will hit the ground running on their campaign promises.

In the riding of Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills incumbent UCP candidate Nathan Cooper has been re-elected. Cooper said he is looking forward to continuing the work he has been doing the past four years.

Turnout at advance polls hit record numbers. Nearly 700,000 Albertans voted early, well above the previous record set in 2015, of 235,000.

Overall voter turnout is expected to be high due to the turnout at advance polls.
