The mayoral race continues to heat up in Airdrie, with another candidate declaring her intent to run.

Marie Lauer said she first considered running for Mayor after attending a forum at the University of Calgary about the importance of women in government. Her decision was solidified after watching the way some local issues shook out.

"I just started to realize that there's some issues, for me, in terms of governance and leadership, and I believe I have strength in those areas, and I really have a heart for my community and want to do what's best for it."

Lauer believes Airdrie is at a critical moment in light of its explosive growth, and leadership and governance is a major issue that she plans to campaign on. She's also made community engagement a central part of her platform.

"Ensuring that we have a community engagement policy, which is a Council level policy, is very important to me because I think that we really need to include our community in the decisions that impact their lives."

Additionally, Lauer believes community facilities and gather places are also an important discussion.

"I'm not going to suggest that I have the answers, but I do suggest that we go to the community and find out what they're looking for. Is it a library? Is it a new recreation centre? Is it a multi-purpose event space? Is it a cultural centre?"

Although Lauer has not held elected office before, she feels that her extensive community involvement in the City has given her the necessary skill set. Lauer was awarded the Soul of Airdrie Award at the 2015 Airdrie Volunteer Awards for her extensive work with the Airdrie Food Bank, Airdrie Angel, and Airdrie 2014 Alberta Summer Games Committee. Lauer also worked with the Airdrie Chamber of Commerce, and currently sits on the board of directors for the Highland Primary Care Network.
