A man in his mid 30's was flown by STARS Air Ambulance to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary in serious condition last night after being impaled by a broken tree branch.

At around 7:00 pm, Cochrane EMS were called to the vicinity of Highway 40 and Transalta Road in the MD of Bighorn.  While they were on their way they were told that the man had sustained a severe upper leg injury after being impaled by a broken branch that was about three inches in diameter.

The incident took place while he was riding an ATV-style vehicle in an area north of Hiway 40.

The Cochrane EMS chose a meeting point where they could intercept the patient who was being driven from the area.  Because of the severity of the injury and the distance to a hospital the EMS crew requested the STARS helicopter.

The man was flown to Foothills in serious condition with the branch still in his leg.

Cochrane EMS say there were no other injuries in the incident.
