With Alberta turning blue and two MLAs representing Airdrie and its surrounding communities, The Mayor of Airdrie is hoping it will lead to some big changes for municipalities.

Mayor Peter Brown said he believes there needs to be a fair and stable way to fund cities and the projects they need.

Airdrie has been in need of provincial dollars for things like schools, affordable housing, and roads and overpasses like the 40th avenue overpass which Brown said has been needed for more than a decade.

Brown added that he feels the previous government often overlooked Airdrie when it came to doling out the dollars.

“The vast majority of announcements in the past three years have gone into ridings where those MLAs were from the government and honestly that should never be a prerequisite,” said Brown. “There should be a determining factor on how they prioritize projects, why they do things before others, and that wasn’t happening.”

Brown said a new funding model should be created to distribute funding in a new way so Alberta’s fastest growing city doesn’t get left in the dust.

“I hope that the new government recognizes that whether you’re in opposition or whether you’re in government, that distribution of funds for all the infrastructure needs to be dealt with on a priority list.”
