The city has set tentative dates to reopen Genesis Place.

On Monday, July 6, the fitness centre will reopen, followed by the aquatics centre, gymnasium and field house, and the arenas on Monday, July 13.

General Manager Brad Anderson said staff are looking forward to having some life breathed back into the building.

“These recreation facilities are meant to be full of life and energy and activity,” said general manager Brad Anderson. “It’s certainly been a weird three months to have nobody in the building, so we’re excited to have Airdrie residents back.”

There will be several changes to how the facility operates under new COVID-19 guidelines from Alberta Health officials.

One of the biggest changes will be getting people to utilize an online booking system.

“We’ve launched an online reservation system for drop-in, so if people want to come and use the fitness centre or go swimming in the lap pool or in the leisure pool with their family, they’re encouraged to reserve a spot online. [That way] they aren’t disappointed when they show up because some of our capacities are limited under the COVID guidelines as per Alberta Health Services.”

When people enter the facility there will be a health screening area and may be asked to provide a health assessment.

“As people walk in through the door they are going to be screened right off the bat by someone, just to make sure that they don’t have any symptoms and that they are safe to use the facility,” said Anderson.

The facility will also be reserved on Tuesday mornings specifically for seniors 60 and older and those with compromised immune systems who still want to be active, but may have some additional health and safety needs or concerns.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of illness such as cough, sneezing, or a fever is asked to stay home. Guests must maintain a 6-foot distance between themselves and others. When possible people are being asked to pay for services with debit or credit instead of cash.
