A Kananaskis Village pool was re-opened last week after a health inspection deemed that previous health violations were rectified.

The closure order was issued for the Kananaskis Nordic Spa - Elements Pool in early April after water samples revealed high levels of bacteria. According to a Public Health Inspection report, the closure order was lifted on April 8 after two inspections were done; a monitoring and risk management inspection. The pool officially re-opened to the public two days later.

Initially, an April 3 inspection report in which the closure notice was issued, noted that there were several violations cited, two of which were deemed critical.

"Water sample taken on April 1/24 had Pseudomonas isolated. Pool is to be immediately closed and treated to remove contamination and may not reopen until a new water sample is submitted that is confirmed to be satisfactory," the report stated. "The quality of water in a pool operating at greater than 30°C shows the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa."

Pseudomonas is a germ commonly found in soil and water, and according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), ' ... of the one that most often causes infections in humans is called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, can cause infections in the blood, lungs (pneumonia), or other parts of the body after surgery.'

The searchable, online inspection reports for pools became available to the public last year when Alberta Health Services announced the change.

"Albertans have had access to food facility inspection reports online since 2008. While pool, personal service and childcare facilities have always been inspected and reports available upon request, AHS has not previously posted the reports online. New pool facility inspection reports are being posted and accessible online," AHS stated last March.
