It's nearly time for 100 like-minded men to gather and donate a large sum of money to a local charity of their choosing.

The Airdrie 100 Men Who Give a Damn have officially selected the three charities they have chosen to have a chance of getting the $10,000 donation they give out four times a year.

The meeting will take place on July 23 at the Toad and Turtle in Airdrie.

Todd Cuningham with the Airdrie 100 said that they normally don't announce the charities prior to the meeting, but have decided to this time.

"This round we have chosen randomly, by a random number generator, from several nominations from our members. The three presenters are going to be the Big Brothers and Sisters of Airdrie, the Airdrie and District Hospice Society, and the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie."

The 100 men of the organization meet up, eat a meal, sometimes have a speaker and then finally vote on the charity they wish to donate to.

"Our three charities come up and they have a short presentation each where they're able to tell us what they do and what they're about. How our funds are going to affect Airdrie directly. After the three presentations, we go directly to voting."

So far, the 100 Men Who Give a Damn have donated more than $60,000 to local charities

"There's just some really solid, community-minded men in this community. Often that goes overlooked and there's not an outlet for it, so we've created this outlet based on other cities that do this and it's really had a good response," said Cunningham

Cunningham said that the donation the 100 give it out is greatly needed in the Airdrie area

"These charities are hurting. We want to do good in our community as gentlemen and this is a great way to meet like-minded people and to give to our community that does so much for us (with) programs and these organizations that work tirelessly every day."

Cunningham said the Airdrie 100 meetings are special due to their immediate effect on the charities chosen.

"It's a really important way for us to affect real, immediate change in the community with programs and organizations that really are feeling the crunch of the economic downturn. It's a way to reach and do something immediately, not over a year and not waiting until you forget. It's needed."

However, despite their overall success, the 100 Men Who Give a Damn are always out looking to add to the 100.

"It's been difficult. This is our second year and this is our seventh meeting, I believe. In any case, it's difficult to get 100 people organized who will contribute. You can come in for one meeting and contribute, or you can pay for the whole year and come to all four of our quarterly meetings. So, we're always looking to grow and we're always looking for new faces."
