With the legalization of recreational cannabis being put into place on October 17, the provinces and territories of Canada have created restrictions regarding the transportation of the substance in vehicles.

Most provinces and territories tend to agree with treating it like alcohol, requiring that it must be in a sealed container and out of the drivers reach. However, not all have agreed completely

Prince Edward Island is taking a much more relaxed view on the substance, allowing it to be not only within reach of the driver but not prohibiting open package. Manitoba, on the other hand, has taken a stricter standpoint, demanding the substance be sealed container in an external compartment, like the trunk.

Alberta has agreed with the majority and is making it illegal to have an open package of marijuana within reach of the driver.

Penalties for breaking the newly created laws vary. Some penalties can be as small as a simple fine, where in some provinces, like British Columbia, guilty parties could end up with jail time.

Driving while under the influence of marijuana will be treated the same as driving under the influence of alcohol.
