A member of the Airdrie RCMP Detachment is facing charges of Assault Causing Bodily Harm after it's alleged that he assaulted a prisoner.

Constable Dwayne Kirby of the Airdrie Detachment was arrested and charged on April 12th, 2018, with One Count of Assault Causing Bodily Harm under Section 267(b) of the Criminal Code.

RCMP Media Liasion Corporal Laurel Scott says the charge is the result of an RCMP investigation into an incident that occurred August 19th, 2017 when it's alleged that Kirby assaulted a prisoner.

Scott says the Airdrie officer has been suspended from duty since August.  "A lengthy investigation was launched.  Constable Kirby was suspended from duty as a result of an Internal Code of Conduct process.  He remains suspended right now and that's a standard RCMP practice.  This investigation took a period of time and then it was on April 12th that he was arrested and charges were sworn after that."

Scott says that his suspension is standard RCMP practice and not a disciplinary measure.  Kirby's duty status will be reviewed regularly until this conduct matter is completed.

Constable Kirby will make his first court appearance in Airdrie on May 17th, 2018.  Scott says that no further information will be provided at this time as the matter is before the courts.
