Could a tax on sugary drinks make Airdrie healthier?

That could be a possibility if Canada were to adopt a sugary drinks tax, which the World Health Organization is encouraging.

Dietitian Kathy Cunningham with Airdrie's Highland Primary Care Network says a tax like this would help with what they're already telling patients.

"Our tagline here is 'you're sweet enough' drink water and milk rather than juice and other sweetened beverages. What we find is when people drink high sugary drinks they make less room for water and other nutritious things"

Although it's too early to tell if a tax would limit overall consumption, Cunningham says it does makes sense in the long run.

"It's definitely something we don't need so much in our diet. It does displace other things that would be better for us, that's for sure."
