Yesterday the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to a structure fire at 2914 Kingsview Blvd SE.

Crews responded to a fire alarm notification called in by the monitoring company. When they arrived they found light smoke on the lower floor. 11 occupants were able to evacuate the building safely.

A total of two engines, one ladder truck and 14 firefighters were on the scene.

The initial damage to the building is estimated at $5,000. According to the Fire Prevention Bureau, the fire started in the kitchen on the main floor and was caused by unattended commercial cooking. The fire suppression system activated, controlled and extinguished the fire.

"Fire suppression systems play a significant role in preventing the rapid spread of fires, minimizing property damage and safeguarding occupants. It is estimated that the building is valued at $5,210,000," stated AFD.

The Airdrie Fire Department would like to remind everyone that having a functioning smoke alarm cuts the chance of dying in a house fire by half. Each and every home should have a working smoke alarm.
